The Devil. The horned figure was still in Enna's mind as she entered her apartment. Clouds had gathered as the evening came on, and an onshore wind blew in the salty smell of the North Sea. She had intended to jog a few more miles, but she felt more like keeping warm now.
Enna made herself a cup of tea with sugar, milk, and a little cinnamon. It suited the evening. She turned on the reading lamp, sat down in her wing chair, and pulled the blanket up to her neck. That was enough to keep her comfortable. She didn't need a book. She preferred making up her own stories. As a child, she had sometimes imagined that she would be a writer. But the stories she told herself seemed so crazy that no one would want to read them.
Todayâs would be about the devil. What induced someone to make a pact with the devil? Greed or love, what else? In essence, every crime was a small pact with the devil. In the long run, it wouldn't make you happy. The stolen million or the slain rival numbed the pain for a while, nothing more.
How could they guess what Schepker wanted, when they didn't even know his first name? The journalist wanted money. Viola Dietrichsen wanted to secure her farm, which for her, like many farmers in the area, was part of the family. Dr. Sörensen wanted to have sex with Viola. The alleged stepbrother seemed like a fabrication to Enna, even if he really existed. Reality often made the best fiction.
Schepker. The biggest threat to a farmer was flooding. The incoming water made the land salty. There was no insurance against it. But this farmer, as his name suggested, was primarily a sheep farmer. The water might drown sheep, of course, but that didn't fit. There were still sheep grazing on his pastures. Schepker had lost something else â his family. If he wanted revenge, with the help of the devil or on his own, he would not be satisfied with merely torturing his enemiesâ sheep.
The only question was what had made the Dietrichsens his enemies.
Enna had no answer. She sighed into the silence of her apartment, reached for the reading lamp, and turned it off.
Darkness descended upon her. Through the window, she saw distant storm lights over the North Sea. They were horizontal, almost purple flashes of light across the sea. Unfortunately, she couldn't see the sea from her window, but it was there. Enna could feel it. If she held very still, she could feel the eternal heartbeat of the sea. It made her sleepy and happy.
But not today. She took another sip of her cinnamon-sweet tea in the darkness of the room, and watched the weather for a long time. Unfortunately, she was out of ideas.
